I put on my eyeball tee and logging boots to conquer my errands, and when I pulled up to the car repair shop I saw a man watching me pull my chair out of my car and put it together on the pavement. I’m used to this — so used to being noticed and read as helpless in these spaces that steel shields flip up every time I enter a parking lot — always ready to defend my abilities. There are times and places when I need help. Putting my chair together is not one of them. . . I felt the sweat pop out on my upper-lip as I willed myself to throw my chair together at turbo speed before he could read me as desperate and flailing. I’m fine, I thought — I promise! Everyday this scene unfolds, and everyday, I want to say, „Can you see how fast I’m moving? How many times I’ve done this? How can you not see how competent I am?“ I’m not breathing. . . And then I hear him. Such a simple, casual sentence, „Looks like you’ve got this.“ I look up. „Yes!“ I say. „I do.“ . . Thank you, stranger man, for pausing long enough to see the whole scene in front of you. I mean, I’d prefer you not watch me to begin with, but if you’re going to look, thank you for seeing disability paired with strength, for recognizing you didn’t have anything to offer me in this moment that I couldn’t do better myself, and for treating me like the actual human in front of you. The exchange was so small — a handful of words — but to be seen as I am — a slightly spazzy and 100% capable woman running errands in her logger boots and eyeball tee –brought my breath back to me.

In my head, I feel like the Representative of Disabilty. It’s a heavy weight.“
